Overview

Operated by the United States Forest Service, POW Lake Recreation Area is located within the De Soto National Forest. This camp was used to house German & Italian prisoners during World War II and later used as a Navy rifle range, now only old ammunition bunkers and a few foundations remain. Camp sites are available on a first come first serve basis and unnumbered with a 7 day stay limit. There is a 7 acre lake and fishing is allowed. Tuxchanie Hiking Trail is accessible on the east side of PWO lake. Note: All National Forest Campgrounds do not allow alcohol. Hiking trail is foot traffic only. Non-fee campground.

Directions: Take Highway 49 to Highway 67; turn east on Bethel Road; follow Bethel to four-way stop; continue on Bethel for approximately 4 miles; follow signs to lake area.
