Mississippi Masterpieces will culminate with its bicentennial event which will feature a juried art show, performances by the winning songwriters, a featured musician, and readings of works by famous Mississippi authors. There will also be a special reading by former Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Randy Piece, a Greene County native and novelist.
Nearly $3000 in prizes will be available to artists and songwriters, both in adult (18 and over) and youth (13-17) divisions. There is no entry fee for either contest and no residency requirement.
In the art contest, the winning adult will receive a purchase prize of $1,250, with the youth winner receiving $500. Both winning pieces will be purchased by Merchant and Marine Bank for display in the bank's new Gautier branch. All art entries are due by Oct. 5.
The event will also celebrate the state's culinary heritage with inventive appetizers and samples from local restaurants and chefs.
Mississippi Masterpieces is funded by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, with support from the Mississippi Development Authority. The event is also partially funded through a grant from the South Mississippi Bicentennial Committee.
