Art educator and multi-media studio artist, Carol Huterson has won numerous awards along the cost for her drawings and paintings. The most recent of which is the Kathy Lounsberry Award of Excellence at the 2023 Ocean Springs annual judged show. She is also the recipient of the 2024 MS Art Commission grant.

This 6-week painting class will include the basic process of approaching watercolor painting techniques. The class will be positive and encouraging – A perfect opportunity to learn the basics.  You will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook and challenge yourself at home. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced artists are welcome to hone their skills in a fun environment!

Intro to Transparent Watercolor will be held for 6 weeks starting on Thursday, March 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.


Week 1: You will go over setting up suggestions, care for brushes, and types of paper available. The teacher will demo several practice paint methods and exercises, such as wet-on-wet, flat washes, graded washes, changing colors, backwash, masking fluid, lifting colors, and mixing warm and cool blacks.

Week 2: You will practice making preliminary thumb-nail sketches from an original still-life setup, understand composition do's and don'ts, transfer your best thumbnail to a larger piece of paper, and begin to lay down your first color. The teacher will review background washes at this time.

Week 3: Complete your still-life painting.

Week 4: Create a landscape or seascape painting.

Week 5: Using an under-pattern on a floral painting.

Week 6: Student choice of subject matter. The teacher will emphasize the pros and cons of working with photographs vs. real life.
