Deacon John & The Ivories present a throw down dance party on Saturday, October 15, at 7PM, taking attendees back to the days when legendary Black musicians traveled the South. Deacon John is no stranger to the 100 Men Hall, having played the venue during the Circuit’s most robust period in the 50s and 60s and then returning for the 2011 erection of the MS Blues Trail marker.
The Chitlin' Circuit was African-Americans making something beautiful out of something ugly, whether it's making cuisine out of hog intestines or making world-class entertainment despite being excluded from all of the world-class venues, all of the fancy white clubs and all the first-rate white theaters.
~Preston Lauterbach, The Chitlin' Circuit.
Bay Saint Louis’ iconic 100 Men Hall continues its year-long Centennial Year Celebration with its second event, Chitlin’ Circuit Weekend, October 14-15, 2022. October’s eclectic, three-day event will honor the Hall’s culturally rich history and uphold its current mission of educating Mississippi Gulf Coast residents and visitors about the venue’s significant contributions throughout its first hundred years.
Deacon John is last man standing on the Chitlin Circuit, he says: "Like Dizzy Gillespie told me a long time ago: You've got to outlive the competition."
The sounds of the blues will mingle with the sweet aroma of food available for purchase from Big Boyz BBQ. Rodney Beals' “butt-master” barbecue is in his blood!
Throughout the weekend, attendees will be able to purchase a commemorative, letterpress poster created by Kennedy Prints and proclaiming “I eats the blues, I sleeps the blues, I is the blues” a quote by Deacon John. This is the second of four customized posters that Kennedy Prints has designed and is producing for the Centennial year, with copies of each to be donated to the archives of Mississippi Universities and Colleges.
Tickets may be purchased online and available at the Hall’s Will Call the day of each event. Tickets sold at the door, based on availability, may be higher in price.
