There’s no denying Mississippi’s rich past beginning with Native American tribes settling the area hundreds and hundreds of years ago, to French exploration in the late 1600s leading into the 21st century. The state’s history with the Civil Rights Movement is well-documented all across the state and especially on the Mississippi Gulf Coast on the Freedom Trail. There are also the self-guided Blues Trail and Country Music Trail that run through South Mississippi showing how the state became the birthplace of America’s music.
