Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast: Statement on Sports Betting Legalization
MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST (May 15, 2018) - The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uplift the ban on sports betting marks a pivotal moment in the gaming industry on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This ruling has put the tri-county region, and the state of Mississippi as a whole, on a level playing field with other great gaming destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, with the potential to substantially increase visitation and, in turn, create an immense economic impact.
This new competitive landscape brings about important considerations and innovative opportunities;
- A new customer, young adults (mid-30s) with an average HHI of approximately $75,000 per year
- Destinations with gaming venues will become preferred locations for major sporting events
- MS Gulf Coast track record as a successful and effectively regulated gaming destination will add transparency and protection to the integrity of its gaming industry
“The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to lift the ban on sports betting brings a new dimension and a wealth of opportunity to the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s already successful gaming achievements,” said Milton Segarra, CEO of Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast. “Working in conjunction with our partners in the gaming industry, we will be able to inspire a renewed interest in our destination and, most importantly, attract new visitors to the area,” said Segarra.
