150th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION & LOUISIANA NATIVE GUARDS COMMEMORATION!

April 14

Come out for this celebration and a historical marker installation commemorating the Louisiana Native Guards, African-American soldiers stationed at Ship Island during the Civil War!

Native guard troops stationed at Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island during the Civil War launched an attack on Pascagoula April 9, 1863 which became the one of the first African-American Union troop combat engagements in the Civil War. The guards summarily fought the Confederate troops and withdrew back to the ship with prisoners and the Confederate flag.

Guest speakers: National Poet Laureate Natasha Tretheway, Civil War Historian Bennie McRea, Jr. & National Park Superintendent Dan Brown! Presented by the Native Guard Commemoration Committee, JZ 94.5, & Ship Island Excursions.
