Peter Anderson Festival Showcases Fine Arts on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST – More than 100,000 visitors are expected at the 27th Annual Peter Anderson Festival of Art in Ocean Springs, November 5-6, 2005, where local and regional artists display their wares in tribute to Biloxi master potter, Peter Anderson.

The Peter Anderson Festival is an event visitors can not only attend, but “experience.” From face painting and live demonstrations for the children to artists in action for the adults, this festival is much more than an arts display.

Along with his brothers Mac and Walter, also notable artists, Peter started Shearwater Pottery almost 75 years ago. In 1983, the festival was named in his honor to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Shearwater. Today the Peter Anderson Festival has grown into a “Top 20 Annual Event” declared by the Southeast Tourism Society. The festival attracts the art of more than 300 artists selected by a jury panel.

“This year’s event promises to be a spectacular weekend under the majestic oaks linking the streets of downtown, where over 93 small shops, galleries, and restaurants reside,” said Margaret Miller, executive vice president of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to browsing art on display by the Ocean Springs Art Association and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Mudslingers, visitors can spend time at the celebrated Walter Anderson Museum of Art, listen to live street music, and sample a variety of favorite Coastal and ethnic foods.

“The Peter Anderson Festival is just one of the annual events on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that pays tribute to our destination’s rich artistic and cultural heritage,” said Stephen Richer, executive director of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Once visitors experience an event like the Peter Anderson Festival, taste our cuisine, listen to local music, and enjoy our renowned hospitality, we have no doubt that they will return again and again.”
