Designed by world-renowned golf course architect Donald Ross, and built in 1908 by Charles Nieman, a prominent New Orleans architect, The Great Southern Golf Course is the birthplace of golf in Mississippi.
Originally a nine-hole course built to accommodate tourists staying at the Great Southern Hotel, the course became known nationwide, attracting such golfing greats as Walter Hagen, Henry Cotton, Jock Hutchinson, Collette Vare’ and Babe Didrickson Zaharias. In the 1945 Gulf Coast Invitational, Sam Sneed defeated Byron Nelson on the nineteenth hole of a sudden death playoff on hole No. 1. The purse was $6000 in war bonds! This course is full of history and offers an excellent view for a fun full day of golf!
The 18-hole course features 6,236 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. The course rating is 67 and it has a slope rating of 114.
