Carl Joe Williams: Shades of Perception

New Orleans artist Carl Joe Williams is driven by the search for universality. The rhythmic patterns in his paintings are inspired by the geometric forms found in nature. Williams describes his works as “symphonies of colors” that present a powerful visual experience. His interpretations are enhanced by his vision of art and music as extensions of one another. An accomplished musician as well as a visual artist, Williams incorporates his musical compositions into videos and installations. Found objects play an important role in Williams’s works by becoming elements a narrative continuum that addresses societal and historical concerns.

March 24 - May 1

The Emancipaton Proclamation 1863 and the March on Washington 1963 Exhibit

Charting the course of civil rights in America, Changing America takes a look at two seminal events in this historic journey: the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and the 1963 March on Washington. One hundred years separate the Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington, yet these two events are profoundly linked. Both events were the results of people demanding justice. Both grew out of decades of bold actions, resistance, organization, and vision. In both Americans can take inspiration from those who marched toward freedom. The University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus is one of the selected sites to host the six-week exhibit from March 24-May1, 2014.
