"Carnival on the Coast" Mardi Gras - Mississippi Gulf Coast Style

"Carnival on the Coast" is an exciting season for the young to the old, locals, & visitors! Elaborately decorated floats throw "treasures" (trinkets like beads, stuffed animals, logoed cups, doubloons, food items called "Moon Pies" and more) to eager bystanders! "Throw Me Something Mister" is a familiar phrase yelled out by on lookers to the carnival "Krewes" on the floats as they pass by hoping to "scoop" up some of these exciting items. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, there are more than 20 parades. The Mardi Gras Season attracts over 450,000 people every year and continues to grow in popularity.

In 1908, the Gulf Coast Carnival Association was the first Krewe to parade on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with 17 floats. Today there are more than 20 parades, a long way from one parade with 17 floats, with each parade having 20 or more floats! In 2005, Hurricane Katrina slowed the celebration, but did not stop the carnival season. The party continued even under adverse conditions with each city holding smaller versions of their parades. With the addition of two new parades in 2009, and in 2011 the Long Beach Carnival Association Parade making its debut as an evening parade, the coast continues "Carnival on the Coast" with the party getting bigger & better every year!

Awarded American Bus Association (ABA) Top 100 Events 2003!
Awarded Southeast Tourism Society (STS) Top 20 Winter Event 2010, 2011 & 2013!

Mardi Gras Trivia: The March 9th and February 3rd dates are extra special, because those dates only occur once in a lifetime, each occurring roughly once every 100-150 years. The next date of March 9 is the year 2038. The closest many of us will see the Holiday to that date, in our lifetime, was 2011 when Mardi Gras occurred on March 8th. On the other end of the spectrum, very few of us will see the next February 3 date, which is 2285! February 5th was the earliest this century, which occurred in 2008, the next one that early will be in 2160!

Art Exhibits @ Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport

Two new art exhibits are now on display at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. The art exhibits feature the work of Suzy Templin and Betty Magee.

Suzy was born and raised in Minnesota where she earned two bachelor degrees in Fine Art from the Minnesota State University graduating in 1996. She relocated to South Mississippi's Keesler Air Force Base in 1989 where she was hired as a Military Fine Artist. She has been doing coastal artwork for 25 years where her true love for the Gulf Coast is portrayed. She has won the Biloxi Seafood Festival Poster Contest five times. Suzy recently won Chefs to the Coast event's poster contest and the Blue Moon Art Project that was held during The Peter Anderson festival in downtown Ocean Springs.

Betty Magee began seriously painting over 40 years ago. Betty was born in McComb, MS where her father was a very prolific graphic artist, and her roots were really in New Orleans, LA where she began her art career. She won awards in her first four shows she entered which was an endorsement for her to go forward. Betty is accomplished in all mediums oils, pastels, ceramics, watercolor, acrylics and more. Art is her identity. Betty loves to paint nature. The native flora and fauna of the coast, especially the bogs with pitcher plants are represented in her exhibit in the airport. Betty also is one of the founders of the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center of Arts & Education.

Both exhibits occupy the display cases located near the airline gates on the second floor of the terminal building.

Rebecca Alston Art Exhibit @ WAMA

November 14 - January 31

The Walter Anderson Museum of Art is pleased to present the works of Ocean Springs native Rebecca Alston. The current exhibit combines three distinct bodies of Alston's work: Earth's Voice, Bioforms, and Convergence. Alston's interest in extra-artistic, most notably scientific, issues fuels her restless, inquisitiv sensibility, making her ever more eager to understand the universe from all vantages, from the compilation of mathematical data to the aesthetic appreciation of natural form. Alston finds new beauty in nature by following in the footsteps of scientific inquiry; for her the telescope and the microscope, the data graph and the spectral scale are no less artistic tools than are the pencil and the paintbrush. Learn more at http://www.rebeccaalstonstudio.com/

The African Diva Project: Paintings by Margaret Rose Vendryes

Margaret Rose Vendryes in an artist, lecturer, historian, author and curator with a bachelor's degree in Fine Art and master's and doctorate degrees in Art History. She began The African Diva Project in 2005 and has expanded the project into an outstanding exhibition that questions the role of race and gender identification in contemporary African and African American communities. Each canvas features a full-figure portrait of a popular black female soloist. Each wears an African mask, chosen for its character and/or aesthetic compatibility to her image, either an actual mask or a mask painted on paper, and applied to the canvas in the place of her face. Songs ... messages that once rose out of vinyl channels, like black magic, are inscribed in the space that surrounds them. The exhibition will be accompanied by the music of each artist.

Sarah Qarqish + Morgan Welch: Art as Form Art as Function

Forms ranging from organic to ornate patterns exemplify the creative spirit of the Sarah Qarqish / Morgan Welch team from Jackson, Mississippi. Sarah Qarqish studied drawing and graphic design at Mississippi State University. Her passion is working in multiple media on projects that communicate her love of expression and creativity. Morgan Welch is a furniture maker who received a BFA in sculpture and minor in architectural studies from Mississippi State University. Together, Qarqish and Welch create fine art that functions as contemporary furniture, among other artistic explorations in their newly formed HannaBerry Workshop. The focus of the exhibition is form and function. It will feature two and three-dimensional wooden shape configurations that guide the eye of the viewer throughout the large scale floor and hanging installations.
