Bruce Davenport Jr: I See You Looking Exhibit

Bruce Davenport, Jr. is a self-taught artist who strives to preserve New Orleans culture. He was born in New Orleans and grew up in the Lafitte Housing Projects in the 6th Ward Treme neighborhood. Davenport's hand-colored drawings of the Mardi Gras parade bands include fine points, such as the exact number of marchers, detailed uniforms and the instruments played by each band member. The artist's use of ink and colored markers to create neat rows of colorful figures captures the rhythm and dynamics of the bands. His themes also include scenes of his experiences in the Lafitte Projects and penitentiary life, where he visited as a child. Davenport's work has been exhibited in New York, Tokyo and New Orleans and is in public and private collections, including the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Benetton Group.

Isis

November 4-25

ISIS was originally formed by the band's lead singer, Kevin Williams 1990. ISIS started as an original rock band. Touring the East Coast playing their own songs, the band was asked to learn a few covers because people like to hear songs they are familiar with. ISIS watched as its fan base continued to grow as well as their song list of originals and covers. Each member of ISIS lends a wide range of musical influences and styles to the ultimate sound, and the band can instantly switch gears from pounding rock to psychedelic funk and everything in between. It helps when each member is good enough to sing lead vocals in any other band, according to Kevin.

June Ward: Passages and Possibilities

Gulfport, Mississippi artist June Ward is inspired by beauty and color. After studying drawing and art history at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, she continued with other learning venues and private instruction, exploring forms of creative expression. In 2009, Ward was juried into membership of Oil Painters of America and is a member of Women Painters of the Southeast. She serves as a Regional Director for The National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. Passages and Possibilities follows Ward's passages through life as she searched for her artistic voice, open to all possibilities. Her art follows the cycle of the seasons in still life, landscape and figurative works. Flowers in her still life paintings show the natural progression of time with blooms at their peak, fading flowers and seeds signifying the repeating cycle. Her landscapes, which often include figurative elements, speak of the passage of time in different geographical locations. The overriding theme throughout all these categories is the emphasis of light, in an intimate setting accented with Ward's hand painted furniture.

Art Exhibits @ Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport

Two new art exhibits are now on display at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. The art exhibits feature the work of Suzy Templin and Betty Magee.

Suzy was born and raised in Minnesota where she earned two bachelor degrees in Fine Art from the Minnesota State University graduating in 1996. She relocated to South Mississippi's Keesler Air Force Base in 1989 where she was hired as a Military Fine Artist. She has been doing coastal artwork for 25 years where her true love for the Gulf Coast is portrayed. She has won the Biloxi Seafood Festival Poster Contest five times. Suzy recently won Chefs to the Coast event's poster contest and the Blue Moon Art Project that was held during The Peter Anderson festival in downtown Ocean Springs.

Betty Magee began seriously painting over 40 years ago. Betty was born in McComb, MS where her father was a very prolific graphic artist, and her roots were really in New Orleans, LA where she began her art career. She won awards in her first four shows she entered which was an endorsement for her to go forward. Betty is accomplished in all mediums oils, pastels, ceramics, watercolor, acrylics and more. Art is her identity. Betty loves to paint nature. The native flora and fauna of the coast, especially the bogs with pitcher plants are represented in her exhibit in the airport. Betty also is one of the founders of the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center of Arts & Education.

Both exhibits occupy the display cases located near the airline gates on the second floor of the terminal building.

The Mary C's Civil Rights Art Exhibit

Through the month of November The Mary C will commemorate a milestone in American history with an exhibition of photographs and illustrations that document the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi, and images of paintings, prints, and sculpture that tell the story of internationally acclaimed artists' reaction to these events.

Illustrations of Freedom Summer by Tracy Sugarman set the stage for this narrative exhibition while photographs by Mississippi's own Jim Lucas provide this show's poignant timeline. Images in this display include the 1964 search for three missing civil rights workers in Neshoba County, the 1966 James Meredith March Against Fear, the 1967 Wharlest Jackson funeral in Natchez, and the 1967 Senate Hearings to Evaluate the War on Poverty and Senator Robert Kennedy's subsequent trip to the Mississippi Delta. Images of paintings, prints, and sculpture from the Tougaloo College Art Collection complete the story by representing the civic engagement that defined much of the Abstract Expressionist movement and the social responsibility that prompted members of this international art movement to establish a fine art collection at the historically black college located in Jackson, Mississippi.
