The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge offers an excellent place to come & observe wildlife! Due to the sensitivity of both the endangered cranes and the wet pine savanna, visitors are asked to stay in designated open areas. The tours are first come/first serve and RESERVATIONS REQUIRED! Wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes. Binoculars and scopes are available. The tours are geared towards viewing the endangered cranes, but they are classified as extremely rare birds, so sightings are not guaranteed. The tour is approximately 2 hours!

The exhibit features photographs from the collection of C.P. (Kitty) Weaver of Massachusetts and Isiah Edwards of Long Beach, Mississippi, which record the history of the Second Regiment of Louisiana Native Guards serving at Ship Island during the Civil War. Over 180,000 African Americans served in 163 units during the war. Despite discouragement, thousands of black men did enlist in the Union army, including what would become Ship Island’s Second Regiment of Louisiana Native Guards. Like all soldiers, these men fought not just the dangers of the battlefield, but also the dangers of disease and confinement in camp. Inferior equipment and pay were common experiences. Black officers faced discrimination by white officers. Rather than trust untested regiments, white generals often sent African American troops to dig earthworks or garrison remote outposts such as Ship Island, instead of into battle.

Gulfport Dragway is an independent, ¼ mile asphalt-concrete pad dragstrip on an elevation of 50 feet! King of the Hill, Grudge, Test & Tune races are a few of the races held at this track! Gulfport Dragway is located @ exit 31 off Interstate 10! Go south on Canal Road, cross over the railroad tracks go about 1 mile, turn left onto Racetrack Road, continue to Gulfport Dragway! Gates open @ 6pm and eliminations are held around 9pm!

September 25 - January 18

This exhibition celebrates eighty years of creativity and production of an historic American crafts site and facility! 

In 1918 Annette McConnell Anderson bought 24 acres at the mouth of the Biloxi Bay in Ocean Springs and named it Fairhaven. She planned for the location to become a studio and art colony for her family and the community, and in 1923 the family moved there from New Orleans. Around 1926 -1928 son, Peter Anderson became interested in pottery, built a brick wood-burning kiln and Annette bought the late George Ohr’s kickwheel at an auction!

Together with his father, Peter started up Shearwater Pottery in 1928. After learning from his father beginning in 1966, Peter’s son Jim took over the position of master potter and was joined by his own son Peter Wade in 1999. Mac’s daughter Adele and Peter’s children Patricia Anderson Findeisen and Michael followed their fathers as decorators at Shearwater. Peter’s daughter Marjorie Anderson Ashley has long been the business manager for Shearwater Pottery, overseeing the showroom and authenticating old pieces.
