Unforgettable is the only word to describe Mississippi Gulf Coast's picturesque beaches. Soft, sugar- white sand outlines gentle waves that dance on the water's surface. The 26-miles of breathtaking beaches are viewable from Beach Boulevard (U.S. Highway 90). Numerous pull-overs are provided for convenient beach access and photo opportunities. Lengthy piers allow for long, scenic walks over the water. For those seeking water adventures, numerous sailboat, jet ski, and aqua-cycle vendors are intermittently located along the beaches. If you didn't bring your beach chair, don't worry. Beach chairs are available free of charge. For your convenience, public restrooms are provided along the beach.

Many of the residential areas offer quieter, tranquil sections of beaches for sunbathing, romantic walks, or moonlight picnics. Pass Christian and Long Beach, which are just West of the Gulfport/Biloxi area, include relaxing, serene areas perfect for relaxing beach activities.

Sporadic designated areas are reserved as nesting grounds for Least Terns, which are listed as endangered or threatened throughout their ranges. Colonies of up to 500 seasonally monogamous pairs nest in open areas near fresh or salt water. Our sandy beaches provide perfect nesting areas.

A chain of barrier islands protects our shore from storms and limits the amount of strong waves reaching the beaches. The resultant calm, gentle waters are ideal for water-based activities and children. Rich nutrients flow in from the mouth of the Mississippi River to provide excellent food for the bountiful seafood harvested in Mississippi's Gulf Coast.

If surf is your priority, take the Ship Island ferry from the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor. The beautiful stretch of white sand beach on Ship Island was named one of the top ten beaches in the United States by USA Today. Concessions, shelters, and restrooms are available on the island. But be sure to bring sunscreen, as the sun can be fierce. What could be better than a day on an island that's yours to explore, swim, fish, or simply enjoy?
